SUGAR TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
The Sugar Technology Department is committed to enhancing the operational efficiency of the Kenyan Sugar Industry through policy formulation, regulation, effective monitoring of policy implementation and evaluation of performance.
QUALITY OBJECTIVES:
- Conduct semi-annual reviews of industry transport infrastructure as an input to the decisions to support efficient cane haulage.
- Carry out monitoring and evaluation of factory performance on a monthly basis to support improvement initiatives and decision making.
- Annually evaluate and license sugar and jaggery mills and issue molasses permits for effective regulation of the sugar industry.
- Appraise, monitor and evaluate Sugar Development Fund (SDF) financed factory, transport and infrastructure projects on a quarterly basis to ascertain proper utilization of the funds.
- Carry out monitoring of industry compliance with environmental and quality standards at least once every six months and advise on improvement areas.
ROLES OF THE DEPARTMENT:
- Facilitate the development of infrastructure to ensure efficient cane haulage.
- Monitor and evaluate factory performance.
- Advise on best practices of sugar manufacture.
- Carry out appraisal of factory and agricultural machinery requirements.
- Design and implement systems for effective regulation of sugar and jaggery mills.
- Monitor Sugar Development Fund (SDF) financed projects.
- Monitor industry compliance with environmental and quality standards.
- Liaise with other departments to synchronise cane production with factory crushing capacity.
- Appraise millers for registration and licensing in accordance with Pt. III section 14 of the Sugar Act 2001.
STRUCTURE OF THE DEPARTMENT:
HEAD OF SUGAR TECHNOLOGY:
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the role of this position is to provide leadership and technical support in the management of sugar production and its co-products within the established standards.
MECHANICAL ENGINEER:
Reporting to the Head of Sugar Technology, the role of this position is to advice on the facilitation of efficient engineering, design, installation, maintenance and management of sugar technological (mechanical) systems, equipment performance (mechanical) monitoring and evaluation.
SUGAR TECHNOLOGIST:
Reporting to the Head of Sugar Technology, the role of this position is to advice on the facilitation of efficient design of sugar process technologies, their operation and maintenance and management of sugar technological (manufacturing process) systems, technological and production performance monitoring and evaluation and environmental sustainability management in the industry.
CIVIL ENGINEER:
Reporting to the Head of Sugar Technology, the role of this position is to advice on the facilitation of efficient engineering, design, installation, maintenance and management of on construction technology systems, civil engineering works and built assets monitoring and evaluation.
ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS ENGINEER:
Reporting to the Head of Sugar Technology, the role of this position is to advice on the facilitation of efficient engineering, design, installation, maintenance and management of sugar technological (electrical/ electronic) systems, equipment control performance (electrical/ electronic) monitoring and evaluation.
